The normal donkeys are fine but the wild donkeys of the upper Manang valley are scary. They hunt in packs although they are difficult to see in the daytime. At night they have been known to come down from the mountains and slit the tents of trekkers and steal food. In 1996 a pack of wild donkeys carried off a trekker, later making a ransom demand to HMG. Foreign Office and US State Department advice is to treat all donkeys in Nepal with suspicion.

The official Nepalese Government line is that the wild donkeys have Maoist sympathies and have been responsible for an increase in crime in the mountains. It is believed that the wild donkeys have been stirring up discontent amongst the official pack donkeys by encouraging them to demand full union rights (including free collective bargaining and the right to strike).

They might look sweet these animals but I tell you guys - they can be crazy. Crazy I tell you.

Don't bogart that parsley!
