I recommend getting a porter. Two reasons:

1) If you have a guide, he is going to have much smaller pack than you and carrying a relatively big load looks culturally funny (wealthy locals NEVER carry a load).

2) You can employ a porter/guide who speaks some English for less than a guide, and he will carry your load AND guide a bit. Much easier on you, believe it.

Carrying just a daypack makes things (like stopping for photos) much easier and trek more enjoyable in general.

If you get a porter you need a daypack, 25-30 liter range. Doubless as carry-on in plane. For the porter the best pack is a water repellent duffel bag (The North Face makes nice ones, also others). Thay carry things always with a tumpline anyway.

If you insist carrying your own stuff it is dificult to say the right size for a pack outright. All depends on how much stuff you imagine you need (most people take too much). Getting a 60 liter pack would force you not to take an awfull lot of stuff, bigger packs tend to fill up also.

Certainly is is doable to carry your own pack, many people do, but I really do not see any reason to do so. It is also possible to start carrying your own and getting a local porter for a day or two to get a taste of affordable luxury.

Per?
