: How cold does it get by mid-December during the day and in the night and do the tea-houses and lodges have adequate heating during evenings/night?

Expect pleasant days, cold, really cold nights.

: Should we take sleeping bags with us? Are they needed at all and if so, can they be rented?

You need sleeping bags, and are better of with your own.

: Does anyone know of a reliable porter who they have used and the relevant contact information?

: I know that snowfall cannot be predicted but typically is there likely to be snow before mid-December.

It can happen, be prepared for it with warm clothes and good shoes. Donīt go as first ascentionists after snow fall, better let people in big groups do that -if they are not too slow.

: We are not trekking as part of a group though we do intend hiring a porter - unless the new TRC regs take effect by then and we are compelled to hire a guide. However, irrespective of what happpens, are we likely to encounter lots of other trekkers on the AC in late November or is it well past the peak period for trekking? We'd like some interaction with other trekkers during the trek and especially in the evenings when we stop at lodges/tea-houses.

There used to be lots of trekkers, and possibilities for conversation, in some places, now it depends how many are prepared to go in spite of the maoists and TAANs attempts at extortion.

By the way be really careful recruiting a porter, get the wrong guy and he will turn your trek into a constant battle about where to stay, where to go, what to do, etc. I would prefer to do it without porter. As there are so many places catering to trekkers you do not really need a porter.

: Thanks for any guidance on the questions raised above.
