Are you really sure "the lodge owner" do not suffer? I beg to differ..
Let me relate what I have seen in Nuntala when i was trekking from jiri in spring this years.

Whoever has gone trekking from jiri can tell very much that this trail must have seen its glorious day in the early year because there are so many guesthouse on this trail but are pretty much empty now.

While in nuntala , my guide arranged for us to stay in a local guesthouse. It was a big guesthouse with many rooms. But our party of four are the only guests that day. It didnt occured to me that there werent any female homemaker until i saw my guide doing the cooking in the evening assisted by a child that seem to be only 9-10 years old.

Speaking to the baje through my guide, I was told that the child mother had run away when the maoist attacked. The father has left the house to work somewhere else...The big house is now tended by the old grandpa and the boy.Scanning the big dining hall and the empty shelf left with some old books ,one cannot help but to really feel the impact of what the maoist has done.

What i am trying to put across is, the presence of maoist does affect everyone in nepal...including lodge owner. I thought it was pitiful for the child to grow up without his parent. What make it even more sad is knowing the causes of it , ie the maoists. I also choose to believe that the trekking money goes to pay for building the house, food, medical and education (if there is any).

*perhaps to make a plead to those that trek through jiri or khumbu : Do stay in guesthouse that doesnt enjoy high occupancy rate. Your rupees really helps. And you get your dal bhat faster and a more quiet place to sleep in.

These are the people of Nepal who are suffering, NOT the lodge owners, NOT the hotel owners. So what does your trekking-dollars do for them?"
