First, let's deal with the "Not going to Nepal issue". I'm English, live in the Uk with my Nepali wife.As you might expect we have a large extended family in Nepal AND they all want us to go visit but NOT to hand over money to the Maoists. This is the best of both worlds, support the economy, but don't support killers. But, if you go trekking, be prepared to get the same treatment as the Polish trekker if you refuse to pay!
Second, I WILL NOT VISIT THE US WHILE BUSH IS IN POWER, is that clear enough! But also, I would not put myself into a position where I had to hand over money to Al Qaeda terrorists who were killing my own people. Come on folks, get real here, what would your wife/husband say if they were Nepali? What Lodge owners say to you is natural about wanting you to come, but ask the same question of a farmer in Humla and you will get a completely different answer. These are the people of Nepal who are suffering, NOT the lodge owners, NOT the hotel owners. So what does your trekking-dollars do for them?
Third, there are of course alternatives which involve visiting the country, trekking to remote regions to work etc.
Last, sorry if this sounds like preaching, but it is a very serious issue to my family who have been virtually ruined by the Maoists, to friends who do aid work in the Limi Valley, Humla etc and have to pick up the pieces caused by these murdering bastards. And ....... just don't get me going on Tibet ........
: Hi Everyone (sorry I've posted this twice)
: I'm NOT in Kathmandu at the moment, which is the first time at this time of year for many a year since I married my Nepali wife 35 years ago! I have trekked in almost every region, summited many 6000m+ peaks, led treks and climbs for charity (Uk and Nepali) and recently helped to fund a health camp in Humla. BUT it will be a while before I go back. Handing $20 or so over to a group of robbers is easy and a complete copout of the reality over there. Sure, we Westerners can all afford it, but do you realise where this money is going and what it is funding? How many bullets did your emergency trekking money buy? How would a Brit have felt about an American tourist handing donations over to the IRA 20 years ago? How would an American feel about a British tourist handing money over to an Al Qaeda collector? How do you think my Nepali family feel about you handing money over to these murdering bastards?
: Get real, don't go!
