Marcy is correct. The Maoists were charging 5000 rupees between Jiri & Lukla in Oct. last year. My friend and I paid 3k each (so did the other 3 tourists in our hotel). They were pretty bold; they came into our hotel as we were finishing breakfast! Received a pretty fancy receipt, though. Printed in English, the size of a check, it was stamped and approved by the Secretary of the District Organization Committee, PK, of the United Revolutionary Peoples' Council. I've been stopped before on another trip, but I was given a handwritten receipt on a piece of paper torn out of a small notebook. It was only 1000 rupees outside of Gorkha in Nov. 04.

I'd still do the Jiri trek again. Very few tourists, very friendly Nepali's and gorgeous, lush scenery.
