Hmmm In 5 treks I have paid maoists 4 times. Maybe you smoke some of the good stuff from a Thamel tout and think you go trekking but never leave Kathmandu. That's where all the yak shaving comes from too, good drugs....
: I have not heard that one before, but anything is possible. What you have to realise is that the situation with "maoists charging" anything is very volatile. I was on the AC in two months ago (Dec 05) and I expected to have to fork out 100 rupees per trekking day... However I was dissapointed in not meeting any Maoists on trail, or anywhere else for that matter. At least not the Kalashnikov touting, "donation" seeking type.
: Apparently they have all left to go home for winter. So the much sought after hammer&sickle receipt has not been forthcoming. And thinking this was my sixth trek in the last 10 years, not to run into the mao-mao on any of my treks was a bit disconcerting. It's becoming a bit like people telling me about encountering aliens. I am not sure I believe them anymore.
: 5000 rupees sounds a bit much... I am sure that tourists have been asked to pay that on occasion, but not as a rule, and I doubt it has happened in Langtang for any lenght of time. Probably in more remote areas like Makalu or something...
: Villages in Langtang were very supportive of the Maoists a few years ago. They basically wanted change. Now the Tamang living there no longer so supportive of them - broadley speaking, as well as being against the King... Most of them seem to want a representative constitutional assembly. Which probably makes them more progressive (as a cohesive ethnic group) than many others in Nepal.
: One thing about Langtang: some of the friendliest hill people in Nepal live there. For that alone, and it's a great trek.
: : Maoist charging 5000 rupes for donation in langtang? Is that true?
