Yes, it is scary and bumpy. Terrifying in fact. I ran across some Danes once who were trying to radio for a helicopter to take them from Kyangjin raher than face the return journey to Kathmandu. It's worth the experience however. I've done it more than a dozen times and survived. So did the Danes. The fare is only a couple of dollars. No idea what private fares are. good luck
