: sorry to invade this post, it won't go through otherwise. Being from South Africa I would like to know: do I pay with dollars during the trek (teahouses, transport etc)? It seems that the South African rand aganst the dollar is horrendous at the moment, while the rand/nep. rupee is quite stable. This will really influence my budget!
All expenses on the trek are paid in rupees.
If you plan to fly to the start or finish of your trek nad need to purchase an air ticket this will have to be paid for in US dollars.
For other modes of transportation you pay in rupees.
The entry visa on arrival at Kathmandu Airport is the only time when US dollars is a necessity. You will need $30 to buy a visa.
Some upmarket hotels in Kathmandu prefer payment in dollars but I'm sure rupees will be acceptable.
