Kendall, rather than spend the money on the trekking poles just go on a
few day hikes where you live and use some cheap ski poles. Although you
can't retract them, they'll give you a feel for the trekking poles. I did
this and bought some trekking poles, and have been sold on them since. I used
to have shoulder problems from carrying a heavy pack load, but the trekking poles
allow me to keep my arms elevated, and I haven't had shoulder problems since.

They are NOT a waste of money if you know how to use them.

: Hello! I'd like to draw on your experiences -- do you recommend using 2 trekking poles or a single walking stick? Our maximum altitude will be 3000 meters (Poon Hill) on what's classified as a "moderate to strenuous" trek.

: Thanks for your ideas!
