No Walmart? Where do you live? Unfortunately they are a fact of life in Canada but I was amazed to be in the biggest Walmart of my life in Munich. Got all my Transalp photos developed before I even finished my trip. Bought some great wine and excellent marzipan there.

: I agree wholeheartedly that the west should boycott China until they let the Tibetans have their freedom. It wasn't a perfect society there before 1950, but name me a perfect society. It was at least there's and they were not dominated by a superpower that was committing genocide. It is the same as my country did to the American Indians. We, for two, do not buy Chinese goods at Wal-Mart. In fact, the county I live in does not want a Wal-Mart and doesn't have one.

:
: : : In colonial rethoric sutee and other practices regarded as unchristian was often used to legimize colonialsm. Spreading the gospel is much more appealing justification than robbing and raping and enriching ourselves. In fact the Communist excuse is somewhat similar. Liberate them and introduce communism, dictatorship of the proletariat.

: : when i spoke about romanticising tibet in the west, i didn't mean that the chinese invasion was justified because tibet was a fuedal theocracy. my point there is that yes tibetan culture is unique and beautiful (but not any more unique or beautiful than say french culture), but neither is it perfect (hence the example from before 1950). there are elements that were/are not so beautiful and stunning, just as say indian culture is beautiful but there is untouchability as well.

: : : : tibet is certainly romanticized in the west,

: : : I think I disagree with you on that point.

: : in fact, i think it is heavily romanticized, i hardly meet anyone that knows much more about tibet than that the chinese communists invaded tibet and are desecrating their "spiritual" culture. i don't believe any culture is perfect and neither is tibetan. but the average westerner needs to know tibetan culture to know that there is no need to romanticize it either. that has no bearing on one's ability to empathize and understand the destruction of their land and people at the hands of the chinese.

: :
: : : Tibetans are great people, and had a stunning culture.

: : i agree, but that and painting a rosy picture (without any bad elements) are not mutually exclusive.

: : : : but then what would we do about cheap chinese manufactured goods from walmart?

: : : Buy it or produce it elsewhere, until the Chinese give the Tibetans their freedom.

: : my point exactly! why look and blame nepal, when the rest of the world doesn't really give a damn about tibetans, not really anyway. maybe individuals here and there (like on this board), but the average person doesn't. it's not just nepal here that is at fault, if anyone is at fault in the first place.
: : it is easy to blame nepal, i wonder how many will protest our governments to not trade with china - that would affect our own lifestyle, wouldn't it? however, nepal is far away, and nepal-chinese relations can suffer, but not chinese-america/france/australia/uk - add the country of residence - relations.
