Mera Peak is not difficult technically, only a 6 km glacier hike with 1000 meter vertical gain from Mera La pass. The difficulties might come from weather (wind, cold) or bad acclimazation/physical condition.

Mera Peak is a trekking peak and you need a certified guide and a peak permit (about 300USD). As Mera is a bit far from the main trails you need also porters to carry the gear. At least that is the way trekking agencies work, they carry all the food etc. with the group, have cooks etc. In theory it is possible to go to Mera from Lukla as a teahouse trek, as there are some lodges (if you can call them that) along the way. That does not take away the need to have a guide&permit, though.

If you first go to EBC and spend as much time above 5000m as possible, I recommend crossing Ambhu Labtsa and getting to Mera from north. I did that in -85 with a guide and one porter (the late Babu Chirri Sherpa). We all carried about 20 kg.

1) Dingboche to near island Peak BC
2) to the foot of Ambhu Labtsa, short day.
3) over AL to a camp at about 4600 m level on the valley
4) climb to Mera La, camp there
5) hike up to summit, 4 hours, down to camp 2 hours, down to Thagnak 2 hours (fast, fast!!)
6) to the leaning rock bivvy site on the way up to Zartva La
7) over Zatrva La to Lukhla

This fast speed was due to my exellent acclimatization having spent 2 weeks above 5000 m level (Gokyo-ChoLa-EBC area)

At that time there were no lodges so we had to carry all food with us, now this same route could be done with only 3 self sufficent camps (Ambhu phedi, valley camp & Mera La) as there are lodges and food available starting from Mera La towards Lukhla.

If you arrange your own expedition from Lukhla the price should not be more than 1000USD/Pax. In 2000 we paid 2500 USD for a 4 Pax group, 3 weeks Lukhla-Mera-Lukhla all inclusive. That comes to 625USD/pax. Permit extra.

I just love that area! Take a look at the link below.
