I was offered hash oe pot very day 4 or 5 times in Thamel. I was never offered it during my 18 days in the Kumbu. I just returned tonight after over a month in Nepal. If you walk down Freak Street the offers double. "You want hash or you smoke." I am a narcotics prosecutor in the states (coke & meth) so I thought this was ammusing. I spent 3 days in Chitwan and it was growing wild everwhere. I asked and army officer about the legal status and he said "the goverment makes it illegal but the earth does not listen to the government, so it grows." He did say that they have turned people over to the police for public use. Just trivia. I'm on my 3rd Jack and Coke so I'm not judging. But I would be careful.
: I am not too sure on details, but marijuana and hashish is illegal in Nepal, and yes, you can end up in jail. (Nepalis seem to want to follow the dumb policies of some of the more retrograde western countries on this matter...).
: However I have seen pot growing in pots(!!) at a lodge at Himalaya (ABC trek), and no one seemd worried about it, appart from squeamish western tourists.
: Appart from the occasional offer from kids in Thamel, I don't know much more about the situation.
: I don't use drugs (legal or illegal - a totally stupid differentiation I know...). I am silly enough, even without any external chemical perception and mood altering stuff.
: If you do enjoy it, it should be safe to use on any of the major treks. I have seen plenty of tourists enjoying a cone or two on the wooden terraces in Namche, for example.
:
: : A number of sources imply that marijuana/hashish is readily available in Kathmandun and elsewhere in the Himalaya.
: : What are the legal/political risks of a foriegner purchasing and/or smoking marijuana in the Nepal Hiamlaya? In the Indian Himalaya?
: : Is it easy to find?
: : Would it be unwise to fly to Lukla while in posession of said substances?
: : Is law enforcement going to hassle you if you are caught smoking in the Khumbu area? Will the locals be offended?
