Tourist marketeers seem to latch onto anything that will return a profit, regardless of the realities on the ground.
Peter Mathiassen's In Search of the Snow Leopard is a very nice book, and it has a lot to do with planting Mustang in the western adventure tourist's consciousness.
The tour operators and outdoor programs on TV are simply followers. They are not trail-blazers. Whatever is a "safe" product and gets the ratings. How many people have heard of Tilicho? Mustang on the other hand, having been made popular by Mathiassen, has been enhanced by movies like Himalaya, etc. It is safe for them to promote it. Marketing bullshit of course.

: Zanskari people in the finery

: : i've never been to lho manthang, but one factor is the heavy marketing in the west. i have seen at least 3 programmes on tv on lho manthang in the last 6 months - and they make it sound very exotic. buddhism/tibet sells well in the west.

: I think it is rather hyped up. You have areas that are similar in India: Ladakh, Nubra, Rupshu, Zanskar, Spiti, Lahul, are all north of the Great Himalayan Range, and people are Buddhists and speak various Tibetan dialects. With regard to travel and trekking (though not climbing) India is a modern liberal country where you can move freely as you like. Whereas Nepal is medieval. Considering the damage the present rules do to the local economies in Mustang and Dolpho there is no reason to support them by paying 700 USD and travel with a liasion officer etc, etc.
