i've never been to lho manthang, but one factor is the heavy marketing in the west. i have seen at least 3 programmes on tv on lho manthang in the last 6 months - and they make it sound very exotic. buddhism/tibet sells well in the west.

: Intersting, perhaps Navyo or Olga can clear that up. In any case I think Lho Manthang is over rated. Surely, an alpine dessert, all gravel and high ridges, is awesome, but I cannot believe it surpasses the Thak Khola area, with its coniferous forests, high meadows, two 8000 m mountains, Tilicho and the Hidden Valley.
