Another note - we went to Tibet from Katmandy by plane returning by Land Cruiser in September. It was expensive, we did feel ripped off, and there was a "guide" attached to us. I was not keen on going for all the reasons that have been posted, but my trekking pal, Grandma Roe, said if I got to go to Nepal she got to go to Tibet. So we went.
IWe did get to have personal conversations with folks and to exhange email addresses, even with a monk in Lhasa. Seeing the damage of the Cultural Revolution was very sad, but seeing the artifacts that were saved, the resiliance of the people, and the difficulty of managing a large place like Tibet gave me hope for the future of the Tibetan people. I am far from a Pollyana, but despite the Chinese veneer, Tibet was there and available to those willing to deal with the obvious resistrictions. I am glad we went and grateful for the Tibetans who took time to talk with us.

Do look carefully, however, and be prepared to pay more than you expected.
