After a long flight with complicated connections we arrived in Kathmandu late evening. It was agreat relief to see a friendly driver from Red Planet with my name on a sign held above the madding crowd. The hotel is in the centre of Thamel, up a side alley which means that it is quiet for a good night's sleep and yet only 2 mins from the Tunnel Club and other bars.

We really liked this hotel, the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. It was great to be picked up at the airport in a minibus.
Our room was large, clean and fairly comfortable. Hot water was available most of the time, towels and loo paper were in constant supply.
The only down side we found that although it is up a side alley, this alley was frequented by howling dogs and motorbikes everynight and as our room was at the front it was a bit noisy.

I was told about the Red Plant by a friend of mine. It took a while to find it (The sign is at the end of the alley, with a load of other signs in front of it) but it was more than worth it.

Excellently priced for Kathmandu and very friendly staff.

I'm booked in to go back to Nepal in March, and I'll be heading straight back to the Rep Planet.

I must say that all the kudos the Red Planet received on Yetizone were well deserved. This was my first stay there(because of reviews found here) and I was delighted at the room I got for the price. I initially got the basic single room for $5 a night but found that some rooms are noisier than others. I later moved to a "deluxe" room upstairs for $8 since I was near the front desk which was quite noisy. The location of the hotel is about as quiet as one can want in Thamel, especially if your room is facing the Acme Guesthouse in the back. All in all, the staff were **very** friendly and helpful, the price was right, and the location(and therefore low/no noise) was fantastic. I am not a great fan of gawdy Thamel, but the Red Planet is definitely a place I would stay again with much delight.

I booked the Red Planet on the basis of the reviews on this web site and was VERY disappointed. I booked three nights in a "deluxe(!)" room for $11usd per night but left after the first night and found accommodation elsewhere. Basicaly the room and the whole hotel were filthy dirty and the whole place was extremely noisy - I didn't sleep a wink - it's surrounded by noisy bars.

I don't know whether or not the reviews on this site are fake, but for the price there are certainly many much better and quieter hotels available in and around Thamel.

Every time I arrive in KTM I go to the "Red Planet". It´s very clean, the stuff is very helpful, and I love sitting on the roof with a good book! Check it out!

Stay at Red Planet on my arrival to KTM, paid $4/night. Arrangements were simple. Very good breakfast on the rooftop. It's a stone's throw away from KGH (see review).

the hotel was clean and well run, the staff very friendly and helpfull, it is like being in a big happy family. The rooms were comftable and it has an added bonus of being in the middle of all whats going on in thamel, I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone staying in thamel, ktm. The room price was good and the food was well presented, i shall certainly be going back next year!!!!

I stayed in the Red Planet back in 2001 and came there again this year in october 2005. The same people are running the place (which is a good sign) - still very friendly, efficient, clean, reliable (used their storage room heavily and also safe for cash). Good location right in the heart of Thamel.

The bars near by are a bit noisy, but that did not bother us at all - i think they shut down the noise long before midnight...

Bottom line - Red Planet is still excellent and highly recommended.

This is a great place to stay. Having stayed at the Kathmandu Guest House and another hotel in Thamel, this was the best by a mile. Staff were incredibly friendly and helpful - especially the night porter (he even took me on a tour of Kathmandu in his own time at at no expense).
I will be returning to Kathmandu this March (2007) and will definitely be going back there!

Was here when teaching in Boudha. Nice place to stay and cause havoc, all staff were brilliant and willing to put up with our antics. Rooms vary but some very good ones (damned comfortable bed in 202). Food's so-so, depending on Depak's mood, but quite nice taken out on the roof on a warm evening. Warm water all the time, fridge to keep water cool and pretty good net connection. Right in the heart of Thamel, easy to catch taxis and rickshaws with lots of grocery shops around.

Wow that's freaky...i was in room 202! It must be magic! The staff were unbelievable ... Shankar and Depak and Suraj knew everyones names and they were always up for giving good info about what to do, what to see and especially where to eat if you decided against Depaks cooking ... ask for the Dal bhat he cooks for everyone else, it is very tasty! All in all a great place to stay!

this hotel was suggested to me by my buddy who had been there 2 years prior. Lokesh, the manager was super helpful to me. He drove me on his motorbike to the bus station to buy my ticket to Jiri, plus drove me around town to change plane tickets, shopping in the non tourist areas to find great deals on rugs, and table clothes and even batteries and chargers. He'll help you out alot if you ask nicely. He even invited me to his home for dinner.
The rooms are standard, no frills, but I wasn't there much, so it didn't really matter. the showers weren't great, but I met some people at the KTM guest house next door, and used their private in room shower, which was great!!!

The owner/manager of this guest house is named Shashi Tuladhar. his email is nirvanachch@hotmail.com or shashktm@hotmail.com
This man is a crook/thief. He "helped" me buy an air ticket to Bangkok which was unusable. When i tried to get a refund....they would not let me. So I had to let him get the refund. Then he refused to give me my money....saying that the travel agency was responsible. But the travel agency sent me to him. I have heard that he runs verious schemes like this to separate travellers from their money.
If you ever stay at this guest house.....DO NOT let this guy help you out in any way. you will regret it. I still have not gotten my $610 US.
