Day 46 Walpole to Franklin River |
First 5 kilometres follows foreshore trail around the inlet. On crossing the Southwest Highway, you ascent through karri and tingle forest. Nice views over inlet to the ocean at the Hilltop Lookout (7.2 kilometres), followed by the massive stump of a large tingle tree. Summit of Douglas Hill (11.7 kilometres) is followed by descent towards the Franklin River Campsite on the banks of the river. |

![]() Said my farewells to Sandy, then left Walpole at 10am. Lovely walk around the inlet. Lots of information about the flora and fauna. Met two guys filleting fish they had caught, surrounded as they did this by a flock of hungry pelicans. They were talking about Shane Stremple (Swan Districts WAFL), which made my ears prick up. Had an interesting conversation but forgot to find their names. Bit of a hill climb after that but walk was rather pleasant and not too demanding. Franklin River is perhaps the nicest hut and in an excellent location. Met Paul McKay who is the resident caretaker and does an excellent job. Had a good chat, he says he's and atheist but I don't believe him. As they say, you never find an atheist on a sinking ship. Sound of river serenades me to sleep. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
