Day 44 Mandalay Beach to Mount Clare and Walpole. |
Only an idiot like me would attempt this stretch in one day. Very strenuous walk through sand dunes leaving Mandalay Beach and undulating to the Long Point Campsite. (6.5 kilometres) From there to Mount Clare transition from coastal dunes - tall karri forest - tingle trees at Mount Clare. Climb up to Mount Clare was in a word "Torture". Last 10 kilometres into Walpole, however, is most pleasant. |

![]() Great 5 star accommodation these toilets. Couldn't sleep however so wrote an left and entertaining postcard in the toilet along with some flowers. Moving on through testing coastal sand dunes I arrive at the Long Point Hut for morning tea. Took the 1 kilometre spur trail to little cove, which has awesome views of Southern Ocean Swell. Left at 10:30 am for Mount Clare, perched on top of the "mother of all hills", in Red Tingle Forest. Eating the last of my porridge (yuck), I leave at 2:30 pm for the luxuries of Walpole. Lovely 10 kilometre walk into a small town arriving at 4:45 pm. After some shopping an eating, I head off to the backpackers. Sandy had left a message for me that Hermon and Anneke were at the YHA having had to pull out of the walk. Sad for them, sad for me. So close and yet so far for the Dutch Duo. ![]() |
