Buying a bus ticket...
|
The bus leaves at 7am There are a few key things you should be aware of on the bus. Your ticket has a seat number, and you must sit there. Do not give your ticket to any ticket inspectors, show it to them by all means, but keep a firm hold of it. Do not sit on the roof - there have been many incidents of people being robbed on the roof. Do not put your pack on the roof - if you do, it WILL be dipped and any valuables removed. You must insist on taking it into the bus with you. It will have to sit on your knees for the journey. On the way, do not leave your bag unattended. You should be polite, friendly but firm about these little rules to ensure your safe journey. The road is rough and is subject to regular landslips. Although these are probably outside your experience in the west, they are more common in Nepal than traffic lights. Dont get too excited about landslips. The bus will still get through, as the Nepalese maintain a team of road builders specialising in landslip repairs.
The landslip destroyed these switchback bends My bus was delayed by a landslip and I did not get to Kathmandu until 10 pm. Our landslip was just beyond the village of Thare at [28°04.69N 85°14.60E 2,265 metres]. It appeared that a gigantic boulder had slid down the hillside obliterating a series of switchbacks in the road. We walked down the hill and got on another bus on the other side. |

There are great views of Langtang Lirung from Thare which were ample compensation for the delay. Last updated June 2000 - copyright Ian Johnson |
